About Watermill

Watermill

The mill was built during 1847 by N.P.H. Rademeyer. He built approximately 18 mills in his lifetime. He worked from Alexandria up to Riversdal and Van Wyksdorp. He was also instrumental in building the first public road through the Tsitsikamma Forest.

There is a strong stream passing the area and that was the reason for building the water mill at that location.

The building next to the mill was used for residential purposes.

The whole area where the Cultural Centre was built, was used by the farmers to turn the wheat into flour to supply the town. The first owner of the mill was Mr. Rodger Metlerkemp.

They used the mill grounds up to 1905, however, they had to vacate the area as the construction of the narrow gauge railway line had started.

The watermill was last repaired during 1989 and there is a great need for its present repairs as it is a valuable heritage asset.
